Beyond the stomp: the Nobbs Suzuki Praxis as an Australian variant of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training

This article provides a brief overview of the Nobbs Suzuki Praxis (NSP), an Australian variant Method Actor Training (SMAT) developed by John in collaboration with Jacqui Carroll from mid-1990s onwards. After introduction to SMAT and context which NSP evolved it, outlines NSP’s key differences exercise practice design, particularly use signature physical vocal tools, increased structured improvisation within formats. It goes on examine two concepts specific – ‘feeling’ ‘opposites paradox’ how these enable advanced engagement training, especially cultivation heightened awareness self performance environment. The concludes (with reference Crothers Citation2021, 36) suggesting that adds softness is more playful version SMAT. By providing room for invention creativity, embeds creative application SMAT’s principles training itself, rather than seeing it as part separate rehearsal process.
